The little coves beside the ancient harbor

The Limanakia of Hersonissos are a string of small successive coves on Crete's north coast, between Cape Sarantari and the harbor of Hersonissos, about 27 kilometers east of Heraklion. They owe their name to exactly this shape: little bays like natural miniature harbors, where fine sand alternates with rock.

The site carries deep history: this was ancient Chersonesos, the seaport of powerful Lyttos, which flourished in Roman and early Byzantine times. Around the harbor survive remains of the Roman harbor works, submerged fish tanks cut into the rock shelf and, on Kastri hill above the port, the ruins of an early Christian basilica.

The coves are organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas and a cafe, and there is parking, with a paved road reaching close to the shore.
