The farm plain that became a seaside resort
The beach at Gouves stretches along the north coast of Heraklion, about 18 kilometers east of the city, in front of the seaside settlement of Kato Gouves. For generations this plain was farmland of the villagers of Ano Gouves, planted with vegetables, olives and cereals, until tourism gradually took the place of cultivation.
Inland, above the village of Skotino, opens the cave of Agia Paraskevi or Skotino, one of the most important in Crete, a place of worship from Minoan times to the Roman era. Next to Gouves, at Gournes, stand the installations of the former American base, while a coastal road runs the length of the shore, linking one bay to the next.
The beach is organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas and restaurants near the water, parking and shallow water, and a shore laid mostly with pebbles. A section of the coast is among the beaches awarded the Blue Flag for 2026.

About this beach
Gouves is exposed in the meltemi — often choppy on summer N/NE days. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.
The shoreline at Gouves faces north, so it usually has natural cover from southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds.
Gouves has sand underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.
For amenities, Gouves has an organised beach, sunbeds, parking nearby and food nearby. There is a campsite nearby (Creta Camping, ~1682 m).
