The shore of the old thermal baths

Loutra lies on the north coast of Aegina, at the edge of Souvala, the island's second port. It owes its name to the thermal springs at the spot called Therma, which, as the place name and remnants of old structures attest, were known since antiquity.

Aegina is an island of volcanic origin, and the sulphurous waters of Souvala are reported to have been used for rheumatism and skin conditions. After the founding of the Greek state, Landerer, King Otto's chemist, wrote that the water was excellent and that Aegina could become an important spa centre, while it is said that Saint Nektarios himself took thermal baths here in the summer months. The organized baths operated for decades before gradually fading away, leaving the place its name.

The shore is sandy, with water that deepens quickly, and is organized seasonally with sunbeds, umbrellas and a beach bar. The paved north-coast road reaches close to the beach, with parking in a lot or on the street nearby.
