The long sandy beach below the Temple of Aphaia
Agia Marina spreads along the northeastern coast of Aegina and is the island's largest sandy beach. It takes its name from the chapel of Agia Marina by the water, which holds its feast on July 17, while a settlement of this name is recorded as early as 1673.
Above the bay, on the pine-covered hill, stands the Temple of Aphaia, one of the best-preserved Doric temples in Greece, built in the 5th century BC on a site where worship goes back much further. According to myth, the figure of Britomartis is linked to the sanctuary, and from her the cult of Aphaia is said to have arisen. Agia Marina itself flourished as a holiday resort from the 1950s to the 1980s, when it was among the best-known beaches in the country.
The beach has fine sand and shallow water that deepens gently, and is fully organized: sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar, tavernas, showers and toilets, with seasonal pedal boats and water sports. It has been awarded a Blue Flag, offers disabled-access infrastructure according to municipal data, and a paved road reaches close to the shore, where parking is available.
