The urban Thermaikos waterfront facing Thessaloniki
Paralia Peraias stretches along the southern shore of the Thermaikos Gulf, in front of the town of Peraia in the Municipality of Thermaikos, about twenty kilometres from Thessaloniki. It is a long urban sandy beach that looks across the gulf towards the city of Thessaloniki itself. The name Peraia, which evokes 'the land across the water', is said to have been settled in 1923 by drawing lots among three proposed names, as refugees from Asia Minor wanted 'Nea Smyrni' and those from Thrace 'Nea Kallipoli'.
The settlement was born as a refugee quarter after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, when families from the coast of Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace put down roots on this stretch of the Thermaikos shore. Over the decades it grew into a beloved seaside suburb of Thessaloniki, with a waterfront promenade full of cafes, bars and fish tavernas right on the water, while sections of the coast, such as the one at Plateia Mnimis, have been awarded the Blue Flag.
The beach is organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in the summer months, a beach bar, cafes and tavernas close by. The sand is fine in places and coarser in others. Access is by road or bus, with parking near the shore, and in season a sea-bus connection also runs from Thessaloniki.
