The Strymonic Gulf sands with the plane-tree forest at the water

Paralia Stavrou stretches along the Strymonic Gulf, at the eastern edge of the Thessaloniki regional unit, west of the town of Stavros, about eighty kilometres from the city. It is a long sandy beach forming part of a continuous coastal front several kilometres long, on a gulf whose name, taken from the river Strymonas, is mentioned as far back as the geographer Strabo.

The most distinctive feature of this shore is the plane-tree forest that reaches down to the sea, described as the only one in Greece to touch the water, with centuries-old plane trees standing just behind the sand. Within it sits the small church of Agios Ioannis, built by the refugees who settled here from Katirli of Nicomedia after 1922. The old village on the hillside became Ano Stavros, while the coastal settlement kept the name Stavros, and from the 1950s the area grew into a beloved summer resort.

The beach has organized sections with sunbeds, fixed umbrellas, showers and refreshment stands along its length, and according to the official bathing-water profile there is also lifeguard cover. Access is by road, either by private vehicle or public transport, and in the central section the wooded stretch of broadleaf trees casts natural shade behind the sand.
