Black volcanic pebbles next to Mandraki

Large, smooth, black volcanic pebbles ("chochlakia") that continue into the water — the source of its name. It is the closest beach to Mandraki, ~10 minutes on foot, behind the Panagia Spiliani rock.

Essentially undeveloped (a few benches, a little tree shade; food in Mandraki). The sulphur smell is stronger here, and the black pebbles get very hot. Nisyros is an active volcano.

About this beach

Chochlaki is exposed in the meltemi — often choppy on summer N/NE days. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.

The shoreline at Chochlaki faces north-west, so it usually has natural cover from southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds.

Chochlaki has pebbles underfoot with water that deepens close to shore.
