Agali: Folegandros' great sandy cove
Agali lies on the western side of Folegandros, about four kilometres from the Chora, and is the largest and best-known beach on the island. Its shore is spread with fine sand, while the seabed turns rockier a few metres past the waterline.
Its name echoes the Greek word 'agkali', meaning embrace, and it is said to come from the tall rocks that frame the bay and seem to enclose it. Footpaths and small boats set off from Agali towards neighbouring, more secluded beaches, so it works as a starting point for exploring the western coast.
The beach is not organized, but taverns serving fish and seafood, a cafe and parking operate nearby. You reach it by paved road, by the local bus in a few minutes from the Chora, or by boat from the island's port.
