The endless sands on the Avdira plain
Myrodato beach stretches across the Avdira plain on the coast of Xanthi, west of the harbour of ancient Abdera and close to the village of Myrodato that shares its name. It is one of the largest sandy beaches in Thrace, running a long way down the shore and opening out generously in places, laid with fine, pale sand. The neighbouring village, known during the Ottoman period as Kalfalar, was renamed Myrodato in 1928, and by one reading the name evokes 'myro', fragrance.
This vast expanse of sand is the work of the Nestos: over the centuries the river, one of the largest in Greece, carried down enormous quantities of sand and sediment that shaped the low-lying Abdera shore. The beach belongs to the wider wetland complex of the Nestos Delta, one of the largest in the country and a stopover for migratory birds, an area within the Natura 2000 network. A little to the east lie the ruins of ancient Abdera, the city founded by colonists in the 7th century BC and home to the philosopher Democritus.
Its central section is organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas and beach bars that operate seasonally, and there is parking nearby. The seabed keeps its sandy relief with a gentle gradient. Access is by a surfaced road from Myrodato and Avdira, and the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag.
