The city beach beside an ancient court
Freattyda is the urban beach of Piraeus on Akti Themistokleous, at the southeastern tip of the Piraiki peninsula, just past Zea harbour. The name preserves the ancient Phreattys, said to derive from a phrear, a well, in the area; the old cove was also known to locals as Tsirloneri, after the many wells once found around it.
In antiquity the historic cove housed the homicide court known as "en Phreattoi", which tried exiles accused of a further killing. According to the ancient sources, such as Demosthenes' speech "Against Aristocrates", the accused pleaded his case from a boat, never setting foot on Attic soil, while the judges sat on the shore. Remains of the court's steps are reported on the eastern side of the cove, on the grounds now occupied by the Hellenic Maritime Museum. The beach in its present form took shape in the early 1960s, as an artificial shore along Akti Themistokleous, in the years when Zea Marina was being built.
It is an organized municipal beach with umbrellas and sunbeds in the summer season, beach bars and cafes, and it stands out for its accessibility infrastructure, with a SEATRAC system, a changing room and a WC for visitors with disabilities. The shore mixes sand and pebbles with rocks in places, the water is deep, access is easy from the coastal road with parking nearby, and lifeguard coverage is provided in the summer months.
