The salt-village shore near ancient Pydna

Alyki sits on the coast of northern Pieria, in front of the seaside settlement of the same name, at the northern end of the Alykes Kitrous sands. Its name is literal: alyki means a place where salt is made, and the small settlement's life has long been tied to the salt pans of Kitros. During the Ottoman period the settlement was known as Touzla, the Turkish word for a salt pan, until 1927.

A short way to the north, close to the coast, lies the archaeological site of ancient Pydna, one of the most important cities of ancient Pieria. In its plain, in 168 BC, the famous Battle of Pydna was fought, where the Romans defeated Perseus, the last king of Macedonia. To the south stretches the Kitros lagoon, a Natura 2000 network area with sand dunes and rich wading birdlife, where written records attest salt pans in operation as early as 1725.

The beach is organized, with seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas and a beach bar, plus cafés and tavernas close by. The road is paved almost to the shore and parking is available, while the sand is fine in places and coarser elsewhere.
