The sandy shore beside the historic salt pans
Alykes Kitrous lies on the coast of northern Pieria, on the western shore of the Thermaikos Gulf, beside the Kitros lagoon and its namesake salt pans. The sandy beach, also known as Skala Alykon or the beach of Kitros, stretches for about 250 metres, with fine and coarser sand and a sandy seabed that deepens gradually.
It owes its name to the salt works of Kitros, among the largest in the country, where official sources put salt production at around 40,000 tons a year. Salt-making here has a long history: a 1725 record from the religious court of Veria attests that the salt pans were already operating in Ottoman times, while tradition traces production back to the late Roman and Byzantine periods. The lagoon, at the site of ancient Atherada, where the harbour of ancient Pydna is believed to have stood, is part of the Natura 2000 network and hosts flamingos and rare wading birds in winter, while its sand dunes are reported to be the most extensive in northern Greece.
The beach is organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in season, a beach bar, and cafés and tavernas close by. Access is via a paved road that reaches close to the shore, with parking nearby.
