Prassa: Kimolos' white-sand shore

Prassa, also known as Agios Georgios, stretches along the north-eastern tip of Kimolos and is considered the island's best-known beach. Its fine white sand and backdrop of low hills give the setting a character that stands out among the Cyclades.

Kimolos is of volcanic origin and rich in industrial minerals such as perlite and bentonite. The white colour of the sand is attributed to the area's limestone rocks and perlite, and old perlite mines survive on the slopes above the beach. From that same white earth, kimolia (chalk), the island is said to take its name. Near the shore stands the little church of Agios Georgios, the islet of Prassonisi lies just offshore, and the sea caves nearby give refuge to the Mediterranean monk seal, monachus-monachus.

The seabed near the shore is sandy and shallow. A beach bar organises the beach seasonally with umbrellas and sunbeds, and a canteen or cafe operates through the summer months. A surfaced road reaches close to the beach and there is parking a short distance away. The facilities are seasonal and not to be counted on outside the summer season.
