The rock platforms below the cannons
Spilia lies on Hydra, just a few metres west of the harbour, below the old cannons that stand at its entrance. It is not a beach in the usual sense: rocks and stone slabs descend steeply into deep water along the coastal path that leads towards Kamini. The name means "cave" and is said to come from a small sea cave beneath the slabs from which swimmers dive.
The spot is bound up with the island's naval history: above the rocks rise the harbour bastions, eighteenth-century fortifications that once guarded its entrance, their cannons still in place. Atop the bastion stands the statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis. Since Hydra has no cars, Spilia is reached only on foot, along the walk that begins at the main port.
It is unorganized, with no sunbeds or natural shade: bathing is from shaped rock platforms, with access steps on the harbour side, and the entry leads straight into deep water. The port's services are a few minutes away, and cafes and restaurants are reported right above the rocks.
